North Sea
The English first walked on New York soil in 1640, when they disembarked at what is now North Sea.
North Sea is surrounded by the gorgeous and fully developed villages of Southampton and Sag Harbor. Although our English forefathers would find none of this recognizable, they would have no trouble finding exactly where they landed. It is still called Conscience Point, as it was then, and this historic spot is commemorated by a 20-ton boulder bearing a plaque that honors the landing. Now a habitat for maritime grasslands and a sanctuary for migratory songbirds, the point is located in a 60 acre National Wildlife Refuge.
