Soho/Nolita

Soho/Nolita

From Canal Street to Houston Street, from Lafayette to the Hudson River.

Lofts! Lofts! Lofts! Many of SoHo’s expansive apartments were built in the 19th Century, when the use of cast iron for building fronts allowed for larger windows than in traditional brick buildings. The huge windows were used to shed light on factories and offices, which were then converted into the sun-flooded SoHo co-op and condo lofts we know today. In fact, the historic district in SoHo has the biggest concentration of cast-iron architecture anywhere in the world, although SoHo’s manufacturers have given way to artists, fashion designers and Wall Street types seeking light and space in their apartments.

Griffith Thomas Iconic Soho Cast Iron Loft Building

419-421 Broome Street at Crosby is a landmark example of cast-iron Soho loft architecture. This five-story commercial building was completed in 1873. Designed by the firm Thomas & Son. Some identifying features of Thomas' designs are rusticated arches, wide expanses of glass and the use of cast-iron balustrades to embellish a building's façade. The pinnacle of the façade is a central arched pediment. In its day cast iron was referred to as modern urban architecture--the hallmark of new architecture. The building has 50 feet of frontage on Broome Street and an extreme depth of 111 feet. The building still exudes its original grandeur as an architectural masterpiece today. 419-421 Broome Street at Crosby is a live/work collection of three 4400-square foot floor through condominium loft residences, an incomparable 7600-square foot triplex penthouse residence with multiple 3600-square foot terraces and a street level commercial duplex that is the current showroom and design studio of renowned interior designer Thomas O'Brien, Aero Studio.

Additional features of this building include: Full-time doorman has been approved by board, Building staff, porter approved by board.
