Woodcliff Lake was originally rural farmland, home to Tice Farm and Van Riper’s Farm, twin destination for generations of city families to visit for hayrides, apple cider, and pumpkin picking. Eventually, beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the 1990s, Woodcliff Lake developed into a residential borough, as well as adding some commercial development, including currently serving as the North American corporate headquarters for BMW. Though not much of the borough’s rural past remains—the farmstands having been replaced by a Whole Foods—the town still has a bucolic charm. Woodcliff Lake houses are sited on generous lots, surrounded by mature trees and lush landscaping that exemplify New Jersey’s nickname of the “Garden State.” The local parks and rec department run a popular town summer camp, as well as offering community memberships to the large town pool complex and tennis courts.
