Back when Pearland first became a stop on the railroad in 1882, the prairie was a farming paradise, supporting pear trees, fig trees, cantaloupes, and watermelons. But after the two famous Galveston hurricanes, one in 1900 and one in 1915, wiped out the fruit orchards, Pearland pivoted to become a bit of a boomtown, entertaining workers from the nearby oil fields at beer joints and dance halls in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, Pearland is a boomtown again, but this time, the beer joints are serving craft beers and the dancers are more likely to be kids practicing a tap routine.
