Suburban Campbell is right next door to — and almost entirely surrounded by — San Jose. Its fertile soil, coupled with the railroad’s arrival in the 1880s, spurred a century of development that took the city from a bustling industrial center of orchards and canneries to a modern Silicon Valley community that never lost touch with its roots. Campbell’s historic downtown bumps with boutiques, bars, eateries, and street fairs. Commercial spoils, including the popular Pruneyard shopping center, line Winchester, Bascom, and Hamilton, as well as San Tomas Expressway. There’s a slew of parks and access to the Los Gatos Creek Trail, a popular pedestrian and bike path from Willow Glen to the face of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The VTA’s Vasona light rail runs right into town, making it easy to roll into downtown San Jose for a show or Sharks game.
