Chatham

Chatham was arguably the first town on Cape Cod to realize that its setting as a picturesque, prosperous fishing village — complete with shingled houses, a working lighthouse, and pretty beaches — could position it as the perfect seaside getaway for weary Bostonians. In 1914, Chatham Bars Inn, an early luxury resort on the Cape, opened. The Inn, complete with on-site gardens providing farm-to-table cuisine, spa treatments, tennis courts, and golf courses, is still in operation today, boasting many of the same amenities as the day it opened. With the steady success of Chatham Bars Inn, more and more city dwellers began looking to Chatham for their summer retreats, enticed to stay with a slew of high-end shops and eateries on Main Street. Today, about half of the town’s population lives in Chatham year-round, with the population doubling in the summer.
