  • River Oaks

Grand and glorious River Oaks was one of the earliest planned communities in Texas, developed in the 1920s as an exclusive neighborhood by the Hogg brothers, sons of the former governor of Texas. Almost immediately, River Oaks was a success, and it soon became the most expensive neighborhood in Houston. In the intervening decades, the neighborhood has never faltered from its perch. Today, River Oaks has become synonymous with gracious living, with its lush lawns, tall trees, and profusion of azaleas in the spring. Much of the neighborhood owes its distinct style to the architect John F. Staub, who not only designed the original River Oaks Country Club, but also more than 30 of the original houses. Today, Staub houses go for a premium, with high demand for his elegant English Tudors and Spanish Colonials thoughtfully adapted to the Texas climate and lifestyle.
