Chevy Chase, Maryland, is a hop right over Western Avenue, or the street that divides it from Washington, D.C. Its conception as a streetcar suburb parallels that of its D.C. sibling of the same name, each developed in the 1880s as residential areas served by an electric trolley running along present-day Connecticut Avenue. The area we call Chevy Chase encompasses multiple communities, towns, and villages. Despite its breadth, however, Chevy Chase is almost uniformly composed of covetable single-family homes (with construction dates ranging from the early 20th century to yesterday) along lovingly landscaped streets. Those looking for an exception to the rule with the same D.C.-proximal convenience may find it in Friendship Heights Village, a more urbanized section with apartments and condominiums, eateries, shops, and a Red Line Washington Metro stop. Scenic Rock Creek Park and bustling Downtown Bethesda provide ideal locales nearby for distinct brands of weekend strolls.
