Get to know Herndon

Herndon is an incorporated town in Fairfax County, located just to the west of Reston and north of the Dulles Airport Toll Road. Named for American Naval explorer William Herndon in 1858, the village attracted veterans and their families after the Civil War. A vibrant community with great restaurants and shopping has sprung from what was once farmland. While you won’t see any high-rises in Herndon, there are plenty of condos, townhomes, and detached single-family residences across a vast price range. Four county parks (Bready, Alabama Drive, Stanton, and Folly Lick), a public golf course, and the Herndon Rec Center, along with access to a 45-mile rail trail running from Arlington to Purcellville, offer residents a wide variety of options to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Multiple Metrorail stops along the Dulles Access Road connect Herndon to the entire 100+ mile Metro system.

Living in the Washington Metropolitan Area

The Washington Metropolitan Area starts with the District of Columbia proper and radiates out to the inner suburbs of Virginia and Maryland and stretches all the way to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Colloquially, many locals refer to the region as the DMV, an abbreviation for D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, but will often just say they live in D.C. when they technically have an address in one of the states. Each town has its own specific atmosphere and residents — even the newly transplanted — often display fierce loyalty to their own suburb of choice. Generally, towns that are closer to D.C., especially those inside the Beltway, have more access to public transportation and more pedestrian-friendly downtowns, while towns on the far reaches of the metropolitan area like Charles Town, West Virginia, will have a more rural feel and fewer daily commuters to D.C. and its immediate environs.
