Riverdale Commerce & Culture
Riverdale's storied housing stock is among its most celebrated draws. Fieldston, a privately-owned community enfolded in the trees, lies in a historic district of some 250 early 20th-century mansions, along with a few mid-century modern showpieces by noted architects like Usonian discipline Aaron Resnick. Theodore Roosevelt and Mark Twain each summered at Wave Hill, a fieldstone manse in the neighborhood's Hudson Hills section surrounded by botanical gardens and breathtaking views. Yankees legend Lou Gehrig lived on Delafield Avenue, and Mayor Fiorello Laguardia spent his retirement years on Goodridge Avenue. Perhaps all were drawn by the proximity to Van Cortlandt Park, a sprawling green space that is the city’s third-largest. Across its extensive acreage, Van Cortlandt Park is ideal for all varieties of athletic pursuits — even cricket and golf — plus vast nature explorations. Riverdale’s restaurants and bars are plenty, including several irresistible locally-owned favorites where you’ll want to plant your fork as a regular.
