Dering Harbor estate sells for $9.2 million A new benchmark in residential sales prices on the Island has been set. Penelope Moore of the Corcoran Group reported this week that Mostly Hall, the Dering Harbor estate formerly owned by A &P heiress and Island philanthropist Rachel Carpenter, sold for $9.2 million last week. The previous record sale for a residential property was $7.2 million for the Antenucci property on Nostrand Parkway, sold in October 2004. Town Assessor Al Hammond confirmed Monday that the sale price sets a new record. Ms. Moore said that the new owners of Mostly Hall are very private people and that "they will be doing a beautiful restoration of the main house and gardens." The sale includes both the circa 1895 Victorian manor house on 2.3 acres and the waterfront cottage on 2.2 acres on the other side of Sylvester Road. Mostly Hall is a four-bedroom, five-and-one-half-bath manor house with four fireplaces, parlour, living room and grand foyer. Grounds feature specimen trees, fruit orchard, pool and cabana, gardener's studio and herb garden. Built in 1963, the two-bedroom, two-bath cottage features ebonized floors, cathedral ceilings, modern kitchen and master suite with spa-like bath. The grounds include Japanese meditation gardens and a waterside reflection pool leading to a deepwater dock. The house was designed by William Schickel for his own use and construction began in 1890, Phyllis Wallace of the Historical Society said. Two neighboring homes were also designed by Mr. Schickel in the neighborhood known as Germantown. Rachel Carpenter named the house Mostly Hall when she first walked through its doors. |
