Get to know Port Severn

Port Severn is a small waterfront community in the township of Severn and part of Muskoka’s cottage country. The cottages here are beautiful, rustic, and often luxurious; it’s no surprise that the second season of "Bachelor in Paradise Canada" was filmed here, as the area is well known as a sylvan idyll. Port Severn is about two hours away from Toronto, making it an ideal choice for cottage getaways — close enough to go for the weekend, far away enough to feel like another world. There are lakes, rivers, canals, and waterways throughout Severn, with opportunities for boating and swimming everywhere you turn. The Georgian Bay Islands National Park, the world’s largest freshwater archipelago, comprising 63 individual islands, is nearby, and in the winter, it’s a short drive from Severn to Mount St. Louis Moonstone, for excellent skiing and snowboarding.

Living in Ontario's Cottage Country

One might say that cottage country is more of a state of mind than a specific place, but for Ontarians, cottage country generally refers to Muskoka and the surrounding counties. For Canadians, “going to the cottage” is an essential part of the national identity: The cottage is where city dwellers can unwind in remote, bucolic stretches of unspoiled nature and create core memories of jumping off the dock into the cool lake, eating freshly grilled hamburgers, and relaxing in a Muskoka chair. The houses in cottage country might have begun as simple rustic retreats, but today, there are plenty of country manses that are cottages in name only. But even the most luxurious of houses focus on what makes cottage country special — stunning views and quick access to the surrounding lakes and forests.
