Living in Ontario's Cottage Country
One might say that cottage country is more of a state of mind than a specific place, but for Ontarians, cottage country generally refers to Muskoka and the surrounding counties. For Canadians, “going to the cottage” is an essential part of the national identity: The cottage is where city dwellers can unwind in remote, bucolic stretches of unspoiled nature and create core memories of jumping off the dock into the cool lake, eating freshly grilled hamburgers, and relaxing in a Muskoka chair. The houses in cottage country might have begun as simple rustic retreats, but today, there are plenty of country manses that are cottages in name only. But even the most luxurious of houses focus on what makes cottage country special — stunning views and quick access to the surrounding lakes and forests.
